Dickson Ngome's farm at Lake Naivasha in Kenya's Rift Valley has been submerged due to rising water levels. Since 2011, the lake has steadily risen, displacing Ngome's family and thousands of others. Scientists attribute the increase to climate change and heavy rains. Other lakes in the Rift Valley, like Lake Baringo and Lake Nakuru, have also been rising for 15 years. A study found East African lake areas increased significantly between 2011 and 2023. Experts call for better infrastructure and climate action, but for those displaced like Ngome, the future remains uncertain.

Israel’s military raids and strikes over the past year aiming to carve out a buffer zone in southern Syria have raised tensions, frustrated locals and also appear to have scuttled chances — despite U.S. pressure — of any imminent thaw in relations between the two neighbors. Syria’s interim president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, who led the rebels who took over the country, said he has no desire for a conflict with Israel. But Israel was suspicious, mistrusting al-Sharaa because of his militant past and his group’s history of aligning with al-Qaida. Damascus has struggled to push Israel diplomatically to stop its attacks and pull its troops out of a formerly United Nations-patrolled buffer zone.
