BRENTWOOD — A Hampstead man facing life in prison for firing an assault rifle at a Danville police officer during a mental health crisis last year was sentenced to a maximum of seven years in state prison Tuesday.

During an afternoon hearing at Rockingham Superior Court in Brentwood, defense attorney Andrew Cotrupi and Judge Andrew Schulman agreed with the state’s request to sentence Robert Boulter, 52, to prison for a reduced sentence, citing severe mental illness and decades of alcohol abuse in their leniency.
