BOSTON — State health officials want to ensure continued access to vaccines in Massachusetts, amid stepped up scrutiny from the Trump administration over the efficacy of the medicines in preventing diseases among school-aged children.

On Thursday, the state Department of Public Health issued a standing order authorizing pharmacists to administer COVID-19 vaccine boosters to children age 5 and older, despite a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention directive that the shots aren’t necessary for young children and pregnant women.
