BOSTON — Expecting “tight operating conditions” during bone-rattling cold weather this weekend, the regional electric grid operator plans Friday to ask federal authorities for an extension of the emergency order that lets it prioritize reliability over air quality or other typical considerations into mid-February.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright last Sunday issued an emergency order allowing ISO New England to tap into the maximum output of certain power generation sources to prevent blackouts, even if it means temporarily exceeding emissions limits or other restrictions. That authority was to expire Saturday, but ISO-NE said it would be requesting an extension Friday. If approved, the order would remain in effect through Feb. 14.
